In early July 2023, Atlantico Recycling set up shop at the entrance to the town of Las Terrenas, at a place called La Ceiba, to launch its plastic recycling business.
In the shade of a magnificent mango tree, a mobile, self-contained unit processes the town’s plastic waste.
From the sorting and separation center at La Granja, the plastics are sorted by color and type (PET, HDPE).
They are then shredded on site into 12 mm chips to reduce their volume and make them denser for transport to the next stream.
At the same time, a member of the team provides transparent bags to companies and condominiums to capture the flow of plastic bottles and cans at source.
A collection system is being set up for this purpose.
Today we produce about 400 kg of plastic chips per day.
